A Story Still Being Written

A lot of what I learned over the years as I navigate a creative career is the skill of adaptability. Staying flexible, open and less rigid for me has literally allowed me to learn a ton, expand my career beyond anything I could have possibly dreamed of when I started. Through it all I have developed an ability to trust my ability to adapt when things required another shift.

How do you know when it’s time to move onto another thing?

For me it goes back to paying attention to what I am drawn to, giving it a bit of attention, and then eventually folding it into my life to see if it sticks. Giving yourself permission to dip your toes in the water of a new venture, project, career or role is always worth a try. Oftentimes, we may get stuck with how to do this because we cannot see the big picture or how it will turn out for us. We also don’t want to waste our time, especially if our time is already limited and we have a thin margin of energy to put towards new explorations.

Here is what I have found helpful in these moments:

Know that it’s ok not to see the full picture for what you’re building or the new path you’re exploring

Know that it’s ok not to know or understand the role fully (if you are making a career switch or exploring offering a new creative service)

Know that dipping your toes in the water is just that- a simple test or exploration for a moment in time.

With these simple mindset shifts, you can feel confident knowing that you’re going to be ok, you’re going to learn a lot and gain clarity as to keep going or pulling back.

All of this is great! And as I always encourage- there is no harm in trying. If you have that voice inside you that is asking for exploration, you must give it a try!
