Each day I show up to work I am always super grateful. Grateful that I have built a career for myself that speaks for my passions and skills. I never use the term “blessed” because it signifies something that comes from outside of you as if it were “divine intervention” or “luck” or something. Whenever someone tells me I’m “blessed”, I remind them how hard I worked to get here.
But I’ve been at this for years, chipping away at this design path and am super proud that my strategy has worked out thus far.
Yes, I went to design school but it was for a totally different discipline so a lot of the work I am doing now has been mainly self-taught or learned through tutorials, practice and implementation over the years. And if there’s something no one really talks about is how to keep the creative juices flowing when you are a creative professional.
Because if you can’t feel creative, then you’re kinda screwed.
So how do you keep your own creative juices flowing?
For me spending time each day looking at other forms of design and creative expression is really helpful.
I am still a huge fan of Pinterest and value my pre-bed routine of getting lost down Pinterest holes. I’m not necessarily looking at design-related pictures. I look at fashion, read articles and blogs about content trends, inspirational stories, or sometimes will just look up other examples of great web design and photography.
Reading books on topics unrelated to design is also fun for me as well but my most favorite way to get the creative juices flowing is to start the day writing either on this blog or via social media. I’m not sure it will work for everyone but for me it’s the perfect warm up for a day of creative work.
